I hung out with David Forster the same person who sells alpaca socks for bitcoin through Grass Hill Alpaca, which are also the reward for a wager on NPR between two writers.
I interviewed him for the magazine and when the interview was complete he told me he had already put in motion a plan to sell high quality beef for Bitcoin including dry aged steak.
The meat is dry-aged at least 10 days and each package will include ground beef, hamburger, a meaty soup bone, and a package of 2 thick steaks (rib eyes, t-bones, or strip steaks). Dry aged steaks can be as expensive as $48.89 per pound (see http://www.kevineats.com/2013/05/steak-tasting.html). Grass Hill Farm Beef package will be an affordable $10 per pound ($100 per box), plus shipping.
David has been testing the system of raising cattle for a year, selling out all shares of beef he produced to local customers, and he showed me the proof in the form of a 2 pound package of ground meat branded with a Grass Hill Beef label.
“Our meat is 100% grass fed, slaughtered locally, and can be shipped to any location that can receive the farm’s meat in two days,” said David.
Having grass fed beef vs. corn fed, is a key detail as corn fed beef results in much of the unhealthy characteristics associated with red meat sold in supermarkets.
“Corn is a grass, but once it goes to the reproductive stage the fatty acids change from omega-3 to omega-6. When that happens, it also changes the nature of the corn feed that most cattle eat. It changes their digestion and it puts it into different types of fat stores.”
“Grass fed beef, on the other hand, has higher amounts of omega-3 fatty acids instead of omega 6. It also contains higher levels of vitamins A and E, and conjugated linoleic acid which has been shown to slow the growth of cancer cells.”
“Some say that red meat is bad for you. Well it’s only bad for you depending on how it’s raised. If we went back and started raising our beef with grass, the way it used to be, beef would be good for you and you could likely eat as much as you want. It’s also far better for the environment.”
“The saturated fats from grass fed beef is good for you. It actually heals arterial damage, but only if it is a healthy cow raised on grass,” said David before closing the gate to the area where he keeps his alpacas.”
