Hodl Hodl has launched the first part of the exchange’s API today, December 13, 2019.



The new API release will allow any website or application to display offers from Hodl Hodl, best known for its peer-to-peer (P2P) structure that allows it to operate without holding user funds. This will help the bitcoin exchange’s offers to gain greater exposure, which might translate into more trading activity and increased demand for the listed bitcoin. Furthermore, Hodl Hodl users will be empowered to create, edit and update their offers through the API, so they don’t necessarily have to open the exchange’s website in order to benefit from its features.



“The API was developed due to the high demand from OTC [over-the-counter] brokerage desks. It will allow other services such as wallets and different types of aggregators to include Hodl Hodl in their offering. Obviously, this will increase our popularity,” Hodl Hodl CEO <a href="https://bitcoinmagazine.com/articles/video-interview-max-keidun-open-sourcing-hodl-hodl">Max Keidun</a> told Bitcoin Magazine.



<h2>Hodl Hodl API Integrates Wallets, OTC Desks and Aggregators</h2>



In addition to these features, a list of countries, currencies and payment methods supported on the exchange will also get published. The information was already available to everyone who visited the Hodl Hodl website, but the new open-sourcing makes it more accessible and easier to integrate into applications.



Venezuelan bitcoin exchange rate calculator <a href="https://yadio.io">Yadio</a> is the first service to integrate Hodl Hodl’s API, with Bitcoin and Lightning wallet <a href="https://bitcoinmagazine.com/articles/bluewallet-to-integrate-bitcoin-lightning-trading-via-hodl-hodl">BlueWallet</a> working on an integration as well. As a way of increasing use and extending functionality, other wallets, aggregator websites and even automated trading applications can easily find beneficial uses for Hodl Hodl’s code.



“Our ideal partners are those who understand the value proposition of Hodl Hodl,” said Keidun. “I think the main use cases for our API are OTC trading desks, bitcoin wallets and aggregators. For example, our first integration is Yadio — a bitcoin price discovery platform from Venezuela. They were only using LocalBitcoins data, but now they will be able to use our data as well by displaying our offer list.”



As for the forthcoming BlueWallet integration, Keidun envisions more users accessing Hodl Hodl in more ways.



“Basically, BlueWallet users will be able to buy/sell Bitcoin through the mobile app interface,” he said. “This will allow us to increase Hodl Hodl usage vie mobile phones. Some OTC desks are currently in [the] process of doing the integration as well.”



In October 2019, the exchange <a href="https://bitcoinmagazine.com/articles/video-interview-max-keidun-open-sourcing-hodl-hodl">announced the escrow API</a>, to be released in March 2020.



Following this most recent exchange API release, Keidun hinted at future improvements in user experience.&nbsp;



“In January or February 2020 we will roll out very important changes to our platform, which will completely change our users’ experience and interaction with Hodl Hodl,” he said.

These two major decisions marked a departure from their former business model in order to embrace a whole new world of ingenuity and innovation. Through this 180-degree turn, the entire project becomes more cypherpunk and more open to potentially great innovation.&nbsp;



In this exclusive Bitcoin Magazine video interview, <a href="https://bitcoinmagazine.com/articles/hodl-hodl-kicks-off-liquidity-week">Hodl Hodl</a> CEO Max Keidun explains both the pragmatic and the idealistic considerations which led to the decision to take a step back from exchange management in order to focus on writing code and consulting other projects. Furthermore, the co-founder talks about the various use cases for the soon-to-be open-sourced API, and why it’s important to provide useful tools to a greater number of actors — as opposed to trying to avoid regulators all on your own.



<h2>Why Hodl Hodl Is Going Open Source</h2>



In a <a href="https://medium.com/@hodlhodl/opensourcing-the-exchange-8f5632a9a300">recent blog post</a> by the Hodl Hodl team, they explain that anyone will be able to run their own peer-to-peer bitcoin exchange “under their own name and from their own server.” In a world where regulators constantly crack down on everything that doesn’t comply with KYC/AML requirements, open sourcing appears to be a wise move. While it may dilute and cannibalize the Hodl Hodl brand, it definitely brings more freedom to bitcoiners who want to do privacy-friendly swaps between BTC and altcoins or fiat currencies. Nation states can collaborate to shut down a particular business, but they can’t take down code that anyone can run on their home computer.



As Snitko told Bitcoin Magazine, “With exchange project being open source, we'll be earning money by licensing it (open source does not mean free to use) to exchange operators. We will no longer run the exchange, but only write code.”

It’s a solid foundation that anyone can use to create an OTC desk, a prediction market, a peer-to-peer betting market, a gaming payment solution which facilitates swaps for virtual in-game currencies or even a service market for freelancers (such as Fiverr or Upwork).&nbsp;



All of these would benefit from a customizable multisig escrow system and full support for Bitcoin and <a href="https://bitcoinmagazine.com/articles/hodl-hodl-enables-mainnet-trading-via-lightning-network">Lightning</a>. Also, the user interface is already embedded in the package, so businesses should only worry about adapting the Hodl Hodl software to suit their needs.



Co-founders Keidun and Snitko will follow the Eric Hughes <a href="https://www.activism.net/cypherpunk/">mantra</a> which states that “cypherpunks write code” and are, therefore, committed to not holding any keys in their clients’ multisig structure.
