WHAT IS BITCOIN CAGR?

Tracking the growth of the dollar value of your Bitcoin is important, and is particularly true for hodlrs. The Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) is a great way to do this, as it measures the average annual rate at which your Bitcoin’s value increases over a period longer than one year—as if the dollar value of your stack grew steadily, despite the volatility. This metric offers a clear snapshot of the increase purchasing power, when measured in fiat.

The calculator includes two tabs.

  1. Bitcoin CAGR Calculator: This calculator calculates the current CAGR of your Bitcoin stack. Simply input how much you initially paid by entering the starting value, enter the current value, and investment duration to compute your Bitcoin’s compound annual growth rate.
  2. Future Value Calculator: This calculator projects the dollar value of your Bitcoin. Input how much you initially paid, your target CAGR (in percentage), and the time frame to forecast the future value of your Bitcoin.

The Bitcoin CAGR Formula
The formula for calculating Bitcoin CAGR is:

CAGR = ((Ending Value / Starting Value)^(1/n)) – 1

Where:

  • Starting Value (SV): Your initial Bitcoin investment value
  • Ending Value (EV): Your Bitcoin’s value at the end of the period
  • n: The number of periods (years, months, etc.)

Example:
If you bought Bitcoin for $1,000 and its value grew to $10,000 over 3 years, the calculation is:

CAGR = ((Ending Value / Starting Value)^(1/n)) - 1

This means an annual growth rate of roughly 115.44%.

Why CAGR Matters
CAGR is a powerful tool to assess the fiat – or dollar – value of your Bitcoin over time. It allows you to:

  • Compare Bitcoin’s returns against dollars.
  • Evaluate the long-term growth of your Bitcoin holdings, which in-turn helps you plan for the future.
  • Gain a simplified view of compounded growth, even though it doesn’t capture short-term market swings.

Limitations to Consider
While CAGR provides a useful average annual growth rate, it doesn’t reflect the volatility and dramatic price fluctuations typical of the Bitcoin market. So it’s important to understand the value of patience, or low time preference.

HISTORIC BITCOIN CAGR PERFORMANCE

Over the past decade, Bitcoin has consistently outperformed traditional assets like S&P 500, gold, bonds, the U.S. dollar index (DXY), and real estate. This table below compares bitcoin’s compound annual growth rate (CAGR) with these assets, showing exactly why bitcoin remains the most resilient and high-performing asset of the last 10 years. While legacy markets grind along, bitcoin’s asymmetric upside consistently outperforms all other assets.
